[NEWS] Mayday on high alert to lengthen world tour

With more than 90 per cent of tickets for the closing show of their world tour already sold, Taiwanese rock outfit Mayday are considering adding another date to next month's Hong Kong gig.

The tour, which began on their home turf in 2004, has taken the band to cities such as Los Angeles, San Jose, Shanghai, Beijing, Chengdu, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur and Osaka.

Formed in 1997, the group - made up of vocalist Ashin Chen Sin-hong, bassist Masa (Matthew Tsai Sing-yan), guitarists Monster (Wun Shang-yi) and Stone (Shih Hang-wei) and drummer Ming (Liu Yan-ming) - are among the most popular rock acts on the Chinese music scene.

The band, who covered some Cantonese numbers at a mini gig in Hong Kong in November last year, said they wouldn't play the songs again in the upcoming gig. "This will be a gathering of our fans from around the world," Chen said. "We want to keep our style consistent."

He said they picked Hong Kong to close the tour because of its status as an international city.

Although they couldn't get their heroes - the disbanded Beyond - to join them on stage, the band's bassist, Wong Ka-keung, still had some advice for them. "[Wong] warned us that if our fans got too excited during the gig, the venue would turn the lights off," Chen said. "We were so excited when we heard that. It's become our goal."Lee Wing-sze
